Last week at church my pastor made an astonishing revelation. If Americans took only HALF the money they spend on their Christmas gifts this year alone, we could provide clean drinking water for everyone in the world... Is that not shocking? I was honestly disappointed at hearing that because we have the solution at our fingertips and yet, we can't fix the issue. How selfish is the general population? I'm not dissing the joy of giving, as I love to get and make gifts and I love giving them to people, but since a large part of Christmas is about giving, can't we do something huge? Wouldn't it be the second greatest gift of all time (the first being Jesus!) if we could give all people clean water? The answer is right here and we are just shying away from it. We all want new music players, new phones, new cars, expensive jewelry or clothes. How can we be so selfish? Why is it so hard to part with money? For people like me, who struggle to survive, I can understand it. But for those that make a decent amount and have something extra to give, why is it so hard? Don't you feel awful knowing that if you gave something then you could help someone have clear water? People are dying daily because of unsanitary water. In America, we go through millions of bottles of the stuff without even blinking. We need to help. We need to do something. The other hard part is the media. People are way more focused on the president's ill-doing or the latest celeb issue, the most recent natural disaster or who killed how many. If we just stopped and took a few minutes we could at least solve one problem. Don't you think that everyone deserves clean water? If you were one of those people, wouldn't you want someone trying their hardest to help you? You would. You know you would. Now accept that and start researching. Matt Damon is helping on this front, can't you too?
For me, its just aggravating, knowing what's going on and feeling completely helpless. My hope is that for those of you reading this, you'll pass my entry on and help spread the word. Maybe this Christmas we can give the gift of clean water to as many people as we can.
